A PhD position is available at the Florida State University, Department of Geological Sciences (www.gly.fsu.edu) and School of Computational Science (www.csit.fsu.edu), to perform studies on sediment transport and morphology of tidal deltas. We seek students with quantitative skills (differential equations, numerical methods, statistics) who have knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages: Fortran, C, C++, Matlab, and a bachelor degree (diploma) in Earth sciences, Oceanography, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Physics.
Doctoral students will enjoy affiliation with the interdisciplinary School of Computational Science that provides a leading-edge high-performance computational facility.
The research goal is the development of a model for sediment deposition and erosion in tidal environments, through a project sponsored by the NSF program MARGINS (www.margins.wustl.edu/Home.html).
In the lower reaches of many rivers tidal fluctuations are the key factor controlling the delivery of sediments to the continental shelf, the shape and morphology of the river delta, and the stratigraphy of the accumulated deposits. In our project we propose to develop a numerical model to study the morphology, sediment delivery, and related stratigraphy of tidal dominated deltas. As a case study we will focus our effort on the Fly River, Papua New Guinea.
The research assistant will also benefit from collaborations in related modeling projects, focused on the morphology of the Florida shelf and on sediment transport processes in the Venice lagoon, Italy (see also http://www.gly.fsu.edu/~fagherazzi/).
The research assistantship will provide a full tuition waiver and a competitive stipend with benefits. Applications should include CV, name and e-mail address of one or two referees.
